London
is the heart of the European low cost budget airline network. easyJet,
UK's largest lowest low cost airline and Ryanair,
an Irish low cost airline with a major base in the UK are by far the
largest companies in the European low cost market.
Stansted Airport is the London Airport that is dominated by this sector.
EasyJet and Ryanair have major hubs here. EasyJet also has significant
hubs at Luton and Gatwick airports. Ryanair is beginning to establish
flights from Luton, but frequencies are much higher from Stansted. |

Although
easyJet and Ryanair dominate they don't have it all to themselves.
Small regional airlines fly to the Channel Islands, Shetland and Faroe
Islands and Manchester also. |

On
a completely different business model to the European low cost airlines
that dominate Stansted, a recent development has been the inauguration
of business class only long distance flights to the USA.
EOS fly daily to New York with Boeing 757's in a luxury business class
configuration. |
The
airport currently has about 21 million passengers a year with flights
to over 150 destinations in 34 countries.
This is set to expand to over 25 million passengers in the next couple
of years.
The UK government has earmarked Stansted for a second runway that
if built will make a step change in capacity. |
Ryanair
An Irish airline with a very large hub at London's
Stansted airport.Ryanair have a reputation
for offering the lowest fares of all the budget airlines. Ryanar are
infamous for operating into secondary airports of cities in order
to cut costs.
In addition to Stansted, Ryaniar also operate into Gatwick and are
beginning to develop flights from Luton.

An established German leisure airline, Air Berlin have
now joined the low-cost budget boom and begun to operate services
into London Stansted from a number of cities in Germany and a single
service to Majorca.
